Tips for living with your dog: routine, training and rules

Walks and routine, positive training, puppy socialisation, teaching them to be alone and the basic rules when you go out.

Routine and walks

Dogs feel safe with a routine: similar times to eat, walk and sleep. Most need at least two or three walks a day, and how much exercise depends on breed and age: a young Border Collie is not an old Bulldog.

Besides walking, let them sniff: smelling tires the mind as much as running. Stuffable toys and food-search games are perfect for rainy days.

Positive training

Reward what they do well with food, play or a cuddle, right at the moment they do it. Short 5 to 10-minute sessions several times a day work better than one long one, and the whole family should use the same words.

Punishment creates fear and makes problems worse. For difficult behaviour (aggression, fears, destruction), find a positive dog trainer or ask your vet.

Socialisation from puppyhood

Between 3 and 14 weeks of age a puppy learns what is normal. Calmly introduce people, other vaccinated dogs, noises, the car or the groomer, always as pleasant experiences. A well-socialised puppy grows into a calmer adult dog.

Learning to be alone

Get them used to it gradually: start with a few minutes and build up. Come and go without long goodbyes and leave something to keep them busy. If they cry, bark non-stop or destroy things every time they are alone, it may be separation anxiety: talk to a professional.

Basic rules when you go out

Each town has its own bylaws, but almost all agree on the basics:

  • Lead on in public spaces except in designated areas.
  • Always pick up after your dog: not doing so is fined.
  • Some breeds require a licence and insurance: check with your town council.
  • Find dog parks, beaches and places where your dog is welcome on the evoZoa map.
