Heatstroke in dogs: keeping them safe in a Mallorca summer

Signs of heatstroke, what to do on the way to the vet and tips for walking and travelling with your dog in a Mallorca summer.

Why heat affects them so much

Dogs barely sweat: they cool down mainly by panting. When it is very hot and humid, as in a Mallorca summer, that is not enough and body temperature can rise dangerously within minutes.

Flat-faced breeds (bulldog, pug, boxer), puppies, older dogs, overweight dogs, dogs with very thick coats and those with heart or breathing problems are at higher risk.

Warning signs

Act straight away if you see:

  • Heavy, noisy panting that does not ease with rest.
  • Very red gums and tongue or, on the contrary, pale or bluish ones.
  • Thick drool, weakness, staggering or confusion.
  • Vomiting, diarrhoea or collapse.

What to do

Move your dog to the shade or somewhere cool and call the vet: heatstroke is an emergency even if your dog seems to recover. Meanwhile, wet it with cool, not ice-cold, water, especially the neck, armpits, groin and paw pads, and offer water without forcing it.

Do not cover it with wet towels: they trap heat. Our map lists the nearest vets.

How to prevent it

In summer, adjust the routine a little:

  • Walk early in the morning and late in the evening.
  • Check the ground with your hand: if it is too hot for you, it burns their paws.
  • Always carry water and a bowl, also at the beach.
  • Never leave your dog in the car, not even for a few minutes or with the window down.
  • Provide shade at home and on the terrace, with fresh water at hand.
  • Avoid intense exercise in the hottest hours.
